The Etna Doc, one of Italy’s oldest wine denominations, is a rich mosaic of varietals grown on a unique volcanic terroir. 133 districts divided into 20 municipalities that tell a unique territory.
Mount Etna is famous for its spectacular eruptions and also for the many products manufactured in this extraordinary area. Winemaking has been practiced here since ancient times and the Etna Doc was among the first wine denominations created in Italy. Today, it extends over twenty municipalities of the province of Catania, divided into133 districts, each offering varying types of sun exposure and altitude, a range of subtly different microclimates and soils. Vineyards mainly occupy plots located at an altitude ranging between 300 and 1,200 meters above sea level, but the portion of land included in the Doc ranges from 450 to 1000. The production protocol – established in 1968 and modified in 2011 – includes whites, rosés, reds and also sparkling wines (white and rosé obtained from the white vinification of Nerello Mascalese). A truly unique viticultural environment, resulting from the stratification of various materials originating from the eruptions (ash, sands, lapilli, and pumice), the soils are generally loose, with excellent permeability and rich in microelements and assimilable potassium.
